Books & a Bop with Trae Higgs

Date
Feb, 02, 2023

Book lover. Extrovert. Queer. Curator. Jokester. Narrative shifter. Those are just a few words that describe Trae Higgs, founder of Blk Book Swap and host of Global Warming, Inc. in Brooklyn, NY.

From a young age, 31-year-old Trae has always been a reader. She wasn’t like many kids, glued to video games or telephones. So, when she found herself in trouble because of a little sibling rivalry (or something else), what was Trae’s punishment? No books.

Trae’s passion for literature allowed her to explore the truths within and those of the untold, the least known, and thought-provokers like Heather McGhee, Dr. Keisha Blain and Iyanla Vanzant.

Conversations sparked by the works of Black and Brown writers ignited Trae’s mission to educate communities about racial injustices and redefine the narratives of BIPOC through literacy. The social climate of 2020 gave Trae the power to amplify her voice and create Blk Book Swap. The book exchange has grown from a mail-based initiative to in-person pop-ups throughout Brooklyn and surrounding areas.

Blk Book Swap is a safe space for BIPOC to not only swap books but to build communities while engaging in discussions necessary to move the culture forward.

From Lost in a Book to Lost in the Night

Anyone who knows Trae, with her infectious smile, knows she’s all about community. It was at the request of her friends and DJs, Boston Chery and Adair, that Trae would become host extraordinaire of their QTBIPOC-centered dance party, Global Warming, launched in 2022. Trae is a whole vibe who brings her spirited and welcoming personality to any mic and dance floor.

“I longed for spaces like what Global Warming is for me as an adult as a young adult,” Trae shares. “I wanted to provide that for others.”

The Miami native enjoys curating must-see gatherings and giving back to Brooklyn, the place she’s called home for the past ten years.

“I draw a lot of inspiration from the way Brooklyn has attracted and welcomed me in so many community-oriented spaces, whether it be a party or conversation,” she acknowledges. “I’m truly inspired by the environment I’m around.”

Trae Higgs, Blk Book Swap and Global Warming, Inc. aren’t slowing down any time soon.
